THE 56TH ANNUAL TOUR OF THE SCIOTO RIVER VALLEY

America’s Bicycle Touring Classic • May 20 – 21, 2017 • 2500 Cyclists • Organized by Columbus Outdoor Pursuits

There are many rides, but only one is America’s bicycle touring classic; TOSRV. The Tour of the Scioto River Valley began as a father-and-son outing 1962 before quickly growing into (at one time) the nation’s largest bicycle touring weekend. It is completely non-competitive and this year, due to rider demand, is being held on a new date – May 20 – 21st.

Typically, about 3000 cyclists participate in the annual May weekend tour, covering 210 miles during the weekend (105 miles Saturday and 105 miles Sunday). This year, the tour leaves from Heimat House, slightly south of Columbus, Ohio on Saturday morning. There will be plenty of weekend parking on site at Heimat Haus.

Riders have a few options for the amount of miles they can get in. They can sign up for a full one day option (100 miles – Columbus to Chillicothe and back), a 2 day, half distance route from Chillicothe or the full 2 day, 210 mile ride. These two day options take riders to spend the night in Portsmouth on the Ohio River, and return on Sunday to Columbus or Chillicothe. Further details and registration information is available here.

TOSRV is organized by Columbus Outdoor Pursuits (COP), an organization with a full range of non-competitive outdoor activities. The tour has become known as America’s Bicycle Touring Classic.

Since the TOSRV route runs along the Scioto River valley, it avoids the large hills of southern Ohio. On the first day, the first two legs of the route, approximately 50 miles south of Columbus includes some slight rolling grades.  Then on the third leg, from mile 50 to mile 75, there are a series of short, steep hills rolling into Waverly.  The final leg includes a few small climbs around Lake White before flattening out completely into Portsmouth.  The entire route has a vertical gain of 2700 feet.     The Tour returns to Columbus along the same route.
