Rain is finally here. Time to take advantage of the weather and make the most of it. We are focusing on the Switch Back Trail on the Del Mar Mesa (Tunnels). We will have to hike out to the work site from the meeting place, approximately 1.2 miles. We may have to carry our tools in.
1) Rebuild the failing switch back half way down/up the trail. To complete this, we will need to move donated rock, about 1/2 mile away, to the work site. A wheel barrow will be provided but we could use additional ones. Substantial digging and stone work will be needed. The goal is to change the slope to better handle runoff and the hard braking that has substantially eroded this part of the trail.
2) Repair the tread below the switchback where it has multiple deep brake and erosion groves. Create a new tread with the correct out-slope and water control features that will not require continual maintenance.
