SALARY RANGE: $32.21-$45.09/HR

HIRING RANGE: $32.21-$38.65/HR, DOQ

WORK SCHEDULE: MONDAY-FRIDAY- 7:00 A.M-3:30 P.M.

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled technical laboratory work assignments associated with the operation of the wastewater treatment plants.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Collects samples of wastewater influent and effluent for testing. Performs laboratory tests required of a Class A treatment plant. Documents readings and results.
Collects samples and performs process control testing relative to a Biological Nutrient Removal Activated Sludge treatment process.
Performs technical laboratory work including chemical, physical and bacteriological analysis on wastewater. Provides microbiological analysis and filament identification for bulking, foaming and other treatment problems. Performs photomicroscopy and evaluates images of microorganisms in wastewater and plant conditions. Troubleshoots, identifies problems, and recommends actions to remedy wastewater treatment problems.
Conducts standard and specialized chemical and bacteriological examinations on regular and special samples, including complete preparation and quality control. Assists with annual QA/QC testing for the Environmental Protection Agency.
Monitors and calibrates a variety of instruments including inflow and discharge meters.
Assists Wastewater Superintendent in achieving and maintaining Health Department parameters. Maintains knowledge of federal and state laws, local statutes, ordinances, standards, and procedures related to wastewater plant operations
Compiles and enters technical data in database. Produces results using spreadsheets and graphs; interprets data and provides analysis in report form. Creates and analyzes reports; maintains technical records; prepares and presents compliance reports to Wastewater Superintendent as required.
Recommends laboratory policies and procedures. Updates and maintains the procedure manual. Trains other staff on laboratory processes and procedures.
Orders, receives, stocks, and distributes supplies and equipment for laboratory.
Troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs laboratory equipment.
Attends and participates in association meetings.
Performs research on new methods and advances in wastewater treatment through a variety of technical sources.
Assists with wastewater treatment plant and collection system maintenance with cross-training as needed.
Responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information and resolves complaints as necessary
Serves on-call as required; responds to emergencies and performs after-hours work. May be required to work overtime.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED; college level courses in chemistry, microbiology, mathematics, or environmental health; one year of wastewater laboratory experience. Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related field from an accredited college or university preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the practices, principles and methods used in complex chemical, bacteriological and physical analyses of wastewater.
Knowledge of wastewater treatment methods, procedures, operations, and systems.
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to wastewater.
Knowledge of proper sampling techniques.
Knowledge of applicable safety procedures, including laboratory and confined space.
Skill in conducting technical and complex microbiological tests and calculating the results.
Skill in analyzing and evaluating information accurately, and in expressing ideas clearly, when
providing oral or written reports and recommendations.
Skill in the use of laboratory equipment such as a microscope, digital photo microscopy and spectrophotometer.
Skill in the safe and lawful operation of a motor vehicle.
Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
Ability to investigate, analyze, evaluate, and resolve operational, procedural, and personnel problems.
Ability to interpret technical manuals and instructions and to apply general instructions or concepts.
Ability to interpret and implement policies, resolutions, ordinances, rules, and regulations.
Ability to adapt to changes in priorities and meet changing deadlines.
Ability to read locator maps and blueprints.
Ability to use standard office equipment, digital camera, computer equipment and software including word processing, database management, spreadsheet applications and electronic mail.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions with minimal immediate supervision.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:

State of Colorado Class B Wastewater Operator’s License within one year of employment. State of

Colorado Class A Wastewater Operator’s License is preferred.

Colorado Driver’s License. Colorado Class B CDL Driver’s License is preferred.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, squat, twist, turn, grasp, walk, talk, hear, see, perform repetitive movements, demonstrate manual dexterity, and perform light lifting. The position requires both near and far vision for operating assigned equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is also required to bend, crouch, climb and perform lifting, carrying, and pushing/pulling tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 117 pounds.

Work Environment:

The employee is required to work indoors in an office setting and outdoors as needed. The employee is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The employee works in outside weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts. Materials and chemicals may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions, vibration, street traffic unlevel and slippery surfaces and confined spaces. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to occasionally climb ladders, use noise producing tools and equipment, and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions. The noise fluctuates from quiet to very loud at times.
