Definition:
The Water Treatment Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of raw water, non-potable, treated water storage and water treatment plant equipment and facilities. Such facilities may include wells, pumping stations, non-potable water storage, water storage tanks, pumps, automated process controls, flow and measuring systems and other related equipment. This role involves managing a team of mechanics, planning and coordinating maintenance projects, ensuring regulatory compliance, and optimizing maintenance practices. This position must work well independently and with teams, while providing excellent, respectful customer service and human relations skills, which support the City of Brighton\'s mission and values.
Supervision Exercised and Received:
This position reports directly to the Water Treatment Plant Manager. Exercises supervision over the water treatment maintenance programs and staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervise, train, and evaluate the performance of assigned staff.
Plan, schedule, and oversee all maintenance and repair activities for raw water, non-potable, treated water storage and water treatment plant equipment and facilities. Such facilities may include wells, pumping stations, non-potable water storage, water storage tanks, pumps, automated process controls, flow and measuring systems and other related equipment.
Develop and implement comprehensive preventive maintenance programs and schedules.
Monitor and ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations during all maintenance activities.
Lead and coordinate complex maintenance projects, ensuring timely and efficient completion.
Diagnose and troubleshoot advanced mechanical and electrical issues in water systems.
Operate and maintain specialized equipment and tools, including welding and fabrication equipment, loaders, forklifts, dump trucks, jackhammers, drills, pumps, and air compressors.
Inspect and approve work performed by outside contractors to ensure adherence to standards and specifications.
Purchase and manage an inventory of supplies, materials, parts, and equipment.
Maintain detailed and accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and equipment performance.
Provide training, guidance, and mentorship to assigned staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Makes capital and operating budget recommendations and assists in managing division budget.
Conduct regular safety meetings and ensure adherence to safety protocols and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Promotes proper safety precautions for all work performed.
Communicate effectively with the division manager, team members, and other City departments to coordinate maintenance activities and resolve issues.
Respond promptly to emergency call-backs on a rotating, on-call schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance maintenance practices and efficiency.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
Advanced methods, materials, and tools used in the repair and maintenance of equipment and machinery, including pumps, valves, and motors.
Principles and practices of water systems and water treatment.
Comprehensive preventive maintenance techniques related to water systems and water treatment facilities, equipment, and machinery.
Electrical systems and controls, including troubleshooting and repair.
Hydraulic systems and components.
Welding and fabrication techniques.
Relevant federal, state, and local regulations and standards, including OSHA and EPA guidelines.
SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems and their operation.
Advanced proficiency in using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
Basic principles of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
Emergency response procedures for water and wastewater facilities.
Environmental and safety regulations specific to water systems and water treatment.
Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
Ability to:
Perform advanced maintenance and repair tasks involving pumps, valves, motors, and other equipment.
Diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical malfunctions.
Develop and implement effective preventive maintenance programs and schedules.

Education and Experience:
Required:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Five (5) years of experience in maintenance or as a mechanic in utility operations, water/wastewater treatment, or other mechanical facility maintenance.
One (1) year of lead or supervisory experience.
Colorado Certified Water Professionals (CCWP) Class I Water Distribution, or Class D Water Treatment certificate1.
Possession of a Class B CDL1.
Preferred:
Associate’s degree or technical certification in a related field.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to work in various weather conditions, including snow, heat, cold, and rain.
Regularly required to use hands to touch, handle, or feel; talk or hear; and taste or smell.
Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms.
Occasionally required to climb ladders or scaffolding, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Moderate physical effort required by occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.
Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds for short distances.
Ability to perform repetitive tasks and work in confined spaces.
Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators, for extended periods.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, with very loud conditions encountered during the operation of some equipment.
Ability to work in hazardous environments and respond to emergency situations.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Physical dexterity and stamina to perform strenuous tasks for extended periods.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid Colorado Driver's License with safe driving record.
Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred.
Ability to complete FEMA IS 100 and IS 700 training within six (6) months of hire.
