Job Description/Responsibilities:

WSSC Water seeks a Field Laboratory Technician to perform a series of general multi-step duities, including routine sample collection and analysis, data entry, and approval of results for various chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses. Results are made available to external customers including wastewater and water filtration plants, contractors, and the general public.

Key Functions:

Performs physical collection of samples in accordance with the Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, NPDES, Industrial Discharge Control, and all other applicable local, state or federal environmental regulations and Commission policies and procedures
Inspects customer collected samples to ensure appropriate procedures have been followed with regard to the collection and the labeling of samples
Maintains chain of custody throughout the collection process
Obtains water samples from natural sources (rivers, streams and reservoirs), drinking water sources (consumers, sample stations, water mains and tanks), and various stages during and after the treatment process
Analyzes water samples for pH, chlorine, turbidity, dissolved oxygen and other tests using approved methods such as “Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater”
Collects & transports water samples at tanks, distribution sites and water treatment plants and performing field tests to comply with the Total Coliform Rule and Stage 2 DBP rule
Performs system monitoring to include chlorine analysis at fire hydrants, tanks and other locations
Maintains and assures field and laboratory records are accurate, legible, and on time
Enters field analysis results into a hand-held data terminal, downloads data into a Laboratory Information Management System, and verifies sampling data
Performs a variety of chemical, physical and microbiological analyses on aqueous and non-aqueous samples including, but not limited to: color, odor, total hardness, conductivity, turbidity, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, solids, alkalinity, fluoride, chlorine
Utilizes specific instrumentation or computer software to complete analysis
Prepares necessary standards and reagents for chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses in accordance with standard operating procedures and quality control requirements
Maintains, cleans, and prepares glassware and other laboratory appliances for use in various analytical procedures
Maintains all other required analytical, quality control, and maintenance records
Keeps laboratory supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt
Maintaining field water quality panels and fish tanks
Assist with special project sample collection
Aides other laboratory personnel in keeping the laboratory area safe, neat, and clean
Cross-trains other personnel, when requested
Attends training, when requested

Work Environment And Physical Demands:

This position may require extended periods of standing, sitting and/or driving, exposure to physical elements, and on occasion, the ability to move into and out of unusual spaces to collect samples
Some repetitive movements and repetitive lifting of minimal weight, as well as occasional lifting of weights up to 100 lbs., may also be required
Manual dexterity and precision are also required in the use of laboratory equipment and tools, and the completion of the analysis process



Qualifications:
Requirements:

Associate’s degree and 1+ years’ experience in laboratory field operations OR High school diploma (or equivalent) and 3+ years’ experience in laboratory field operations
Possession of a valid driver’s license, with no more than 4 points, and the ability to obtain and maintain a WSSC Water driver’s permit within 90 days of hire or transfer date;
Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed in order to collect and pick up samples from WSSC Water plants and Distribution System
Employees in this position are designated or considered emergency personnel; therefore, the employee must report to work as scheduled or as directed by their supervisor when WSSC Water declares an event that requires emergency personnel to report to work

Preferences: State of Maryland Drinking Water Sampler certificate
