WSSC Water seeks a Process Safety Manager to lead and manage process safety initiatives to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and best practices across all Commission water/wastewater treatment facilities. This position plays a key role in developing, implementing, and overseeing process safety programs, ensuring the protection of staff, the community, and the environment from potential hazards associated with process operations.
Key Functions:
• Establish, manage, and improve process safety programs, procedures, and systems specific to water/wastewater treatment operations, especially focusing on high-risk chemicals such as chlorine gas,
• Ensure compliance with OSHA’s Process Safety Management (PSM) standards, EPA’s Risk Management Plan (RMP) requirements, and other relevant state and federal regulations,
• Conduct process hazard analyses (PHA) and risk assessments; implement controls to mitigate identified risks,
• Lead investigations on incidents and near misses, develop corrective actions, and provide training on lessons learned,
• Coordinate and conduct training sessions on process safety for operations staff, maintenance teams, and contractors, focusing on the safe handling of and emergency procedures for hazardous materials,
• Conduct regular audits, inspections, and reviews of process safety policies, procedures, and facilities; ensure corrective actions are implemented, as needed,
• Collaborate with the Office of Emergency Management to develop, implement, and test emergency response plans for incidents involving chlorine gas and other hazardous chemicals,
• Develop and update process safety documentation, including standard procedures, safety manuals, and training materials,
• Monitor and analyze safety performance indicators, using data to improve processes,
• Serve as a subject matter expert for process safety, offering technical guidance on projects and initiatives,
• Coordinate with regulatory bodies during inspections, audits, and investigations,
• Stay current with industry standards, best practices, and regulatory changes relative to process safety and hazardous chemicals.
Qualifications:
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years’ experience with process safety programs and/or environmental safety & health programs
OR
• High School diploma (or equivalent) and 9+ years’ experience with process safety programs and/or environmental health and & safety programs
Preferences:
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Process Safety Professional (PSP), Professional Engineer (P.E.), or similar professional certification
• Experience with chlorine gas
• Experience with gas, bio-energy, and combined heat and power plants
• Work experience within the utility industry
