Position Summary- Water Quality Technician

The Water Quality Technician is an entry level team member working under direct supervision, training on and performing the following assigned routine duties:

Laboratory: Conduct water quality monitoring, chemical, and bacteriological tests on a variety of environmental matrices. Responsible for field work including sampling and monitoring in the watershed, potable and recycle treatment plants, and domestic discharges and wells. In addition, water quality assists with a variety of research and development projects across the organization.

Position Summary- Water Quality Sr. Technician

The Water Quality Sr. Technician is an experienced team member performing assigned routine and complex duties depending on the following team assignment:

Laboratory: Conducts water quality monitoring, chemical, and bacteriological tests on a variety of environmental matrices. Also, assist with a variety of research and development projects. Responsible for field work including sampling and monitoring in the watershed, potable and recycle treatment plants, and domestic discharges and wells. In addition, water quality assists with a variety of research and development projects across the organization Perform as a resource during the WQ Lead’s absence and assist with training water quality technicians in all aspects of the job.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Water Quality Technician

All Water Quality Technicians will:

Participate in and monitor work to ensure safe and proper work practices and procedures are implemented, adopted, and followed.
Utilize various software programs (LIMS, Tokay, Eris) as applicable to complete daily assignments.
Champion the utilization and implementation of Continuous Improvement tools.
Load and lift various items such as containers, instruments, or other equipment.
Participate in emergency response and on-call duties that include nights and weekends.
Perform other duties as assigned and cross train across Water Quality as needed.


Laboratory:

Areas of focus: water quality monitoring programs, microbiology and chemistry laboratories, and instrumental analysis.
Adheres to the sample collection and laboratory testing procedures in accordance with Federal and State regulations applicable in the State of Colorado in the areas of microbiology, inorganic and organic chemistry for water quality analysis.
Supports and adheres to the Quality Assurance Program.
Analyzes samples in microbiology, inorganic and organic chemical instrumentation such as but not limited to bacteriological tests, HPCs, algae count, pH, conductivity, TOC analyzer, alkalinity, total nutrients, IC.
Authors and updates laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Collaborates on experimental design, testing, and report generation for research projects and stakeholders.
Calibrates and maintains laboratory instrumentation and equipment in operational condition and takes part in the preventative maintenance procedures.
Prepares standards, QC samples, media, and sample bottles for sampling as needed.
In the field, collect raw, recycling, and treated water samples using appropriate sample collection SOP’s and standard methods under the Safe Drinking Water Act.
In the field, analyzes samples for total chlorine, temperature, pH, conductivity, turbidity, alkalinity, total phosphorous and ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved oxygen, bacteriological analyses, and test watershed steam flow.
Assess and evaluate the performance of Source of Supply potable water treatment systems.
Responsible for compliance monitoring for discharges under the Clean Water Act.
Provide tours of Denver Water Laboratory facilities.
Operate boat and utility terrain vehicle (UTV).
Performs related work as assigned.

Capable of completing the work and procuring materials for their assigned teams.
Assists and trains others on standard protocols.
Translate best practices into standard operating procedures and standard work documents.
Ensure work practices align with the Safety Plan, the Quality Assurance Program, and all applicable state and federal regulatory requirements.
Assist with the daily execution of the work.
Schedule, prioritize, coordinate, and monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
Update regulatory compliance metrics for compliance reporting and production board metrics.
Maintain records (LIMS, Tokay, Eris, Excel, Word) concerning the work and programs and preparing reports for internal/external customers as assigned.
Champion the utilization and implementation of Continuous Improvement tools.
Capable of loading and lifting various items such as containers, instruments, or other equipment.
Participate in emergency response, a rotation for on-call duties that include nights and weekends.
Plan and lead presentations, tours, and educational events.
Perform duties as assigned and cross training across Water Quality as needed.

Laboratory Specific Requirements:

Areas of focus: water quality monitoring, microbiology, and chemistry laboratories, and instrumental analysis.

Adhere to the sample collection and laboratory testing procedures in accordance with Federal and State regulations applicable to water quality in the State of Colorado in the areas of microbiology, inorganic and organic chemistry.
Analyze samples in microbiology, inorganic and organic chemical instrumentation such as but not limited to bacteriological tests, HPCs, algae counts, pH, Conductivity, TOC, alkalinity, total nutrients, fluorescence spectroscopy, IC, GC-MS (various), HPLC-MS, and ICP-MS.
Author and update laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Collaborate on experimental design, testing, and report generation for research projects and stakeholders.
Calibrate and maintain laboratory instrumentation and equipment in operational condition and takes part in the preventative maintenance procedures.
Utilize LIMS system to record results of unknown samples and QA/QC standards.
Prepare standards, QC samples, media and sample bottles for sampling as needed.

Pay Range
Hiring Range: $ 24.83-$28.14/hr. Water Quality Tech
Pay Range: $21.73-$33.46/hr.
Hiring Range: $30.57-$34.65/hr. Water Quality Sr. Tech
Pay Range: $26.32-$41.62/hr.

Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED.
Minimum 1 year of related work experience preferred.
Associates degree in related field. -Senior Tech
Minimum of 2 years related work experience.- Senior Tech
Any equivalent combination of certifications, education, or experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities for the position.-All applicable
Licenses, Registration, and Certifications

Within twelve months of hire, must possess one of the following licenses:-Tech
o State of Colorado Distribution Level 1, or State of Colorado Water Treatment Operator Class D.

Must possess one of the following six licenses or licensing combinations at time of hire:- Sr. Tech
o State of Colorado Distribution Operator Level 3

o State of Colorado Water Treatment Operator Class B

o ABPA/ASSE Tester and Specialist AND State of Colorado Distribution Operator Level 1

o ABPA/ASSE Tester and Specialist AND State of Colorado Water Treatment Operator Class D

o RMWQAA Class 2 AND State of Colorado Distribution Operator Level 1

o RMWQAA Class 2 AND or State of Colorado Water Treatment Operator Class D

Other required certifications and licenses:

Must obtain a FEMA ICS 100,200,700 within 36 months of appointment.-Tech
Obtain FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 within 24 months if appointment.-Sr Tech
Must possess and maintain a valid Class 'R' Colorado driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record. - All applicable
Respiratory Protection Testing

This position is subject to respiratory protection testing as directed per Denver Water Physician.
