Hiring Range: $72,000-$80,000

As a member of the Stewardship Section of the Division of Natural Heritage, this Natural Areas Regional Supervisor and Region Steward position will work closely with Stewardship staff to manage state natural area preserves which protect outstanding examples of Virginia’s natural communities and provide habitat for rare plants and animals. This position supervises professional staff including those with law enforcement duties. This position is based in Halifax, Virginia.

Core responsibilities include, planning, supervising, budgeting, and implementing natural areas management activities at state preserves in the Southern Piedmont Region, with a primary focus at preserves in Halifax County. This position will supervise one FTE position plus part-time wage positions and volunteers. Specific duties include developing and implementing plans for management of natural resources, sensitive species and communities, public access and associated signage and access control. Additional duties involve managing procurement needs for goods and services associated with the management of the natural area preserves, including writing scopes of work and managing contractors. Also, this position will work closely with other Natural Heritage staff and partners to facilitate scientific monitoring of rare plants and animals across the preserves, and other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
1. Broad knowledge of Virginia landscapes and the Piedmont physiographic province, including land use history, ecology, and biota.
2. Demonstrated advanced knowledge and experience in applied ecology, natural resources management, forestry, wildlife management, conservation biology, or related biological science.
3. Extensive training and experience in prescribed burning, forestry/silvicultural practices, invasive species management, biological monitoring, and habitat restoration.
4. Proven experience in managing multiple complex projects simultaneously, including planning, budgeting, implementation, and reporting, with demonstrated skills in organization and communication.
5. Proven ability to effectively supervise staff and contractors including training and performance management.
6. Proficiency with computers and applications including word processing, data management, and analysis with spreadsheets.
7. Proficiency with collecting field data using a variety of recording methods, including mobile applications and/or GPS receivers.
8. Proficiency with GIS and GPS software for mapping and spatial information management.

Additional Considerations

1. Demonstrated experience in fire leadership positions.
2. Experience in conducting timber sales including contract management and evaluation of outcomes.
3. Experience and quantitative skills in scientific monitoring methods of land management activity outcomes (e.g. monitoring fire effects or invasive species management outcomes).
4. Applied knowledge of plant ecology, zoology, and/or natural community classification.
