Job Details
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Provides technical and subject-matter expertise to interpret reporting requirements, translate them into standardized report specifications, validate institutionally sourced data and outputs, and deliver accurate, defensible internal and external reports by reconciling discrepancies and coordinating resolutions with technical and data-owner teams.
  • As a member of OIRDS, coordinates cross-unit contributors and is responsible for the preparation, review, and submission of domestic and international guides, rankings, and other university-wide reporting projects (e.g., U.S. News, QS, THE).
  • Captures, extracts, validates, and reports faculty, student, staff, and other critical academic, physical, and financial information for external reporting requirements. Plans and coordinates complex, high-impact reporting deliverables and works with IR staff to ensure consistent definitions, accurate outputs, and timely completion.

  • In partnership with the OIRDS Technology team, coordinates the end-to-end effort to collect, validate, and compile data needed to produce reports for central administration, schools and departments, and faculty.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including new responsibilities that align with unit and institutional priorities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
 
  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics, statistics, social science, or a related field, and 3–5 years of progressively responsible experience working with end users to develop reports, dashboard indicators, and key performance measures, preferably in higher education or another public-sector setting.
  • Experience with using querying tools (through GUI or writing and executing code against large relational databases) and multi-dimensional concepts.  Experience with SAS or SPSS skills (or similar data management and statistical programming skills) and advanced experience using Tableau software.  Must have advanced Microsoft Excel experience (i.e., pivot tables, cross-tab queries, etc.).
  • Demonstrates analytical and conceptual problem-solving skills and applies sound judgment when interpreting information for reporting purposes.
  • Requires the ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail; excellent communication skills; the ability to work collaboratively and collegially with faculty and staff; the ability to work independently; and the ability to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives on data usage. 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in applied mathematics, statistics, social science, or in a related scientific field or discipline.
  • Experience with databases such as MS SQL and Oracle preferred.
  • A strong technical aptitude and desire to keep up with the latest technological and data management advances is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with data in the context of higher education.
  • Experience in Institutional Research related environments.
  • The ideal candidate should have a good working knowledge of higher education operations, practices, and organizational structure.
Equipment Utilized

Demonstrated proficiency with data management and statistical software and experience using querying tools (GUI-based and/or code-based) to retrieve data from large relational databases, including multi-dimensional concepts. Proficiency with SAS or SPSS (or comparable tools) and advanced experience with Tableau are required. Advanced Microsoft Access and Excel skills are also required (e.g., pivot tables, crosstab queries, ODBC connections).

 

Scope and Impact
This position will analyze and review data to identify data reporting issues and to ensure data reliability and validity.  This position will make recommendations to improve data accuracy.  These are very complex tasks and the outcomes have the potential to influence department procedures up to and including university reporting.
