WPO and WDO work together on designer training
The World Packaging Organization (WPO) and World Design Organization (WDO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with initial co-operation likely to focus on training in packaging design and technology.

The MoU formalizes a collaboration which has been growing in different areas over the past year. The special focus, says the WPO, will be on training initiatives for design practitioners in packaging and technology. More broadly, the MoU leverages a shared commitment to sustainability and education, say the signatories.

In a statement, WDO president Srini Srinivasan said: “Now, more than ever, as we work to decrease our global waste streams and protect our environment, it is imperative that we invest and support innovation in the packaging sector and ensure that all designers understand both its potential impact and benefits.”

President of the WPO Pierre Pienaar said: “We always see design as one of the key pillars in the development of successful, sustainable and acceptable packaging. Designs of the future must be in accordance with the circular economy of packaging and always striving to reduce the demand on our global natural resources.”

Pienaar added that he saw the new partnership between the two organizations as a “significant shift in design focus”.

The WPO is an affiliate member of IAPRI, and IAPRI has just taken up an equivalent membership within the WPO (see separate news story).

Srinivasan of the WDO contributed a keynote presentation to this year’s IAPRI Online Conference 2020.
