Wisconsin-Stout begins new collaborative course
The University of Wisconsin-Stout (UW-Stout) in the US has opened a new sponsored course bringing together students in the two disciplines of packaging and graphic design & interactive media.

Some 18 months in the planning, the course is sponsored by Great Northern Corporation, with the close involvement of company CEO John Davis, UW-Stout packaging program director Robert Meisner and professor of graphic design Nagesh Shinde. UW-Stout alumni Kris Johnson and Sarah Murawski, both now employed by Great Northern, are also actively supporting the project.

Great Northern, which supplies packaging and retail display materials, has provided $100,000 in funding towards the sponsored course, which will run four times in consecutive years.

Davis called UW-Stout an “ideal partner” in the project. “I can’t imagine a better learning environment in which to bring two disciplines together to simulate the real-world challenges of creative problem-solving,” he said.

Meisner explained: “It’s an opportunity for students to better understand and grow in appreciation of each other’s majors, skills and methodologies. It’s a chance for them to challenge each other and compromise in order to develop a package that meets the needs of the customer, just like in industry.”

Meisner and Shinde will teach the course which, in this first iteration, has attracted 24 students across the two disciplines.
