Cal Poly students bag four WorldStar awards
Three projects presented by students from Cal Poly Packaging Program students took four awards at the 2021 World Packaging Organization (WPO) WorldStar Student Competition, announced at the end of January.

Taking a Bronze Star Award, as one of the three overall winners, and a Silver Award for Marketing Appeal  was the Sweet Pea project. It was created by Avery Johnson, Maia Nelson, Shahla Prouty, Adi Saaf, Runar Schmidt and Stephanie Tang. This paperboard package brings gardening education and hands-on experience into the home as an extension of schooling, in the form of three lesson plans.

Two projects took a Certificate of Merit, awarded to top 10 entries excluding the top three overall winners. One of these was Art Kit, a packaged system of art supplies for children fighting chronic diseases. It can be customized for its owner, and was developed for non-profit Creations for Cures by Dean Garrido, Chris Jones, Mira Sachan, Cayley Nickerson, Allison Munden and Ian Myers.

The second Certificate of Merit went to the EcoSLO project, worked on by Chris Cheung, Kinsey Mangan, Joey Marshall, Mady McNeill, Natalie Mitchell and Alec Thilmony. The package was again produced for a non-profit, this time local organization EcoSLO, which aims to improve the environment around San Luis Obispo (SLO) County. The kit includes various resources within a functional paperboard package which can contribute to a successful clean-up operation.

All entries were quarter-long projects worked on in classes run by Javier de la Fuente, Linh Dao and Irene Carbonell. As de la Fuente explains, the Cal Poly Packaging Program has garnered 15 WPO Student Awards since 2016 – more than any other single packaging program.

There were over 300 entries to the Student Competition from around the world.
