French university seminar strengthens MSU links A November seminar in Dijon, France, on the impacts on sustainable food packaging systems of the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive marked just the latest stage in co-operation between Michigan State University (MSU) School of Packaging and the University of Bourgogne (Burgundy). Among those presenting at the Dijon event were MSU’s Rafael Auras and Frederic Debeaufort of the French university’s Food Science faculty. Other organization involved included the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the US embassy, the Conseil National de l’Emballage (National Packaging Council - CNE) and the Laboratoire National de Métrologie et d’Essais (National Laboratory for Metrology and Testing – LNE). “We have a collaboration with Bourgogne, in terms of exchange of visiting faculty, and so on,” Auras told IAPRI. “Dr Nasreddine Benbettaieb spent around six months in my lab at the School of Packaging, and we are working on creating long-term research collaboration with my colleague Dr Debeaufort.” During the seminar, a mix of in-person and online presentations explored topics including ‘3R’ strategy, safety issues and testing methods for novel and recycled materials, environmental claims and recycling techniques. In a LinkedIn post, Auras added: “We hope this exchange of ideas helps to seed interest in working for a sustainable future where packaging is seen as an essential instrument and a valued proposition for creating a circular economy and delivering the UN Sustainable Goals.” Published: 11/24/22 |
