Students network at Pack Expo International event

Pack Expo International’s Amazing Packaging Race provided an invaluable opportunity for students from different IAPRI member universities to work together and network at the Chicago show, with the winning team consisting of two representatives from Virginia Tech and one each from Michigan State University (MSU) and the University of Wisconsin-Stout (UW-Stout).

Students from 13 North American universities and colleges were divided into 25 teams for the event at the end-of-October show, each collaborating to complete a number of packaging-related tasks across many exhibitor booths.

Over 30 packaging students attended Pack Expo from UW-Stout. One of them, Anna Kent, was reported saying: “I liked the aspect of being on a team with students from other packaging programs. My team had students from Virginia Tech, Michigan State, Clemson and Cal Poly. Not only was I able to make new friends, I was able to learn what their packaging programs and educations were like.”

The lineup for the winning team was: Gabby Brophy (Virginia Tech), Karinne Ehni (MSU), Noah Hernandez (Virginia Tech) and Greyson Hammer (UW-Stout). Each winner took home $1,000 in prize money.

Workforce development director at show organiser PMMI Kate Fiorianti pointed out that this year’s race was the largest to date. “This goes to show the growing interest from the future workforce in obtaining careers within the packaging and processing industry,” she said in a statement.
