The Passing of Dennis Young The Packaging community has lost a creative, influential giant whose ability to communicate and transfer knowledge and expertise literally changed distribution packaging. On January 20th, Dennis Young passed away after a year of medical issues. In the late 1960’s Dennis was part of a group of thought leaders who introduced and proved the benefits of damage boundary testing. Those efforts started the scientific approach to package design and the validation testing of package/product systems. Dennis played a foundational role in ISTA’s transformation when he helped lead the association in 1995 with a new vision. He was a major contributor to the creation of ASTM D-4169 and then the creation of ISTA’s 1-6 Test Series. Dennis served as ISTA’s Technical. Over the latter years of his career, he transitioned into education where he shined as an instructor at both Rochester Institute of Technology and Michigan State University’s School of Packaging. Dennis was a packaging legend, an incredible mentor and teacher, and a friend to so many in the packaging world. His ease and exceptional talent to share his wealth of technical knowledge, along with a great story and a bit of humor will be deeply missed by the entire community. We all will be forever grateful for his enormous contributions and his remarkable impact on packaging. During a recent effort to document the history of dynamic package/product systems testing, in which Dennis participated, it provided a lucky opportunity for some of us to reflect on his contributions to packaging.
