Clemson awards three research grants for food-related projects In the US, the Sonoco FRESH initiative at Clemson University has awarded three research grants to projects addressing the safety, sustainability and security of food through the supply chain. Two of the projects, funded by packaging manufacturer Sonoco, will investigate modified starch-based barrier coatings for paper and board, and smart and sustainable manufacturing. The third project, funded by logistics company RXO, aims to provide useful tools for understanding and quantifying distribution hazards during transportation. Sustainability goals, including reductions in food waste, figure prominently in the research. Elizabeth Rhue, who is vice president of environmental, sustainability and technical services at Sonoco and FRESH industry advisory board chair, said: “Sonoco continues to sponsor the research funded through Sonoco FRESH, as it provides valuable data and solutions that we incorporate into our business.” Faculty members working on the projects will be: William Whiteside and Sneh Bangar of the Department of Food, Nutrition and Packaging Sciences; Gregory Batt, of the same department, who is also director of the Sonoco Package Testing Laboratory; Brennan Lytle, research manager at the same lab; Zhaoxu Meng of the Department of Mechanical Engineering; and Mark Johnson of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
