| European partners research paper and board coatings A consortium of research organizations, including Materials and Packaging Research & Services at the University of Hasselt (UHasselt), Pack4Food at Ghent University, both in Belgium, and Fraunhofer IVV, Germany, is working with small businesses to develop and assess coatings for paper and board used as food packaging.    The CORNET-TETRA-funded project ‘Functional and recyclable coated paper packaging for food products’ (REPAC²) is scheduled to start work in January, according to Bram Bamps at UHasselt. As the organizers explain, although numerous types of coated paper and board are being made commercially available, it is not always clear if they are fit-for-purpose. At the same time, there is no universally-recognized method to determine recyclability, where coated fiber packaging is concerned. The objective of REPAC² is to support the accelerated implementation of coated paper and board with high functionality (including different types of barrier, sealability and formability) and good recyclability. A method to determine the recyclability of these materials will be developed, and both the recyclability and functionality of commercial materials will be assessed. A further objective involves matching up producers of coated paper and board with food companies, the development of case studies on this basis, and the simulation of shelf-life for specific products.
