Diversity Considerations for Treatment of Children and Adolescents
Developing a sense of cultural competency is a journey that can span throughout an entire professional career. Diversity issues can be complicated and difficult to identify and address when treating adults, children, and families. In this presentation, we will focus on identifying the numerous diversity factors to consider when treating children and adolescents.
The primary goal of this presentation is to raise clinicians’ awareness for identifying such issues and effectively addressing them in treatment. In addition, we will focus on how clinical presentations may vary due to diversity issues. Another goal of the presentation will be to openly discuss how our personal social and cultural biases may impact our experience when diagnosing and treating children and adolescents. A variety of diversity issues will be explored from theoretical, clinical, professional, and personal perspectives. Learning Objectives By completing this program, participants will able to:
Identify diversity issues that impact treatment with children and adolescents.
Recognize the impact of diversity issues on clinical presentation.
Summarize methods to address diversity issues in therapy.
Critique their own perceptions of diversity issues in their clinical work.
