Presentation Description: Municipalities continue to plan for pending ultra-low level (<0.1 mg/L) total phosphorus (TP) limits. This represents the current limit of technology. Two existing tertiary treatment technologies that have been adapted to address this challenge are cloth media filtration and ballasted clarification. Though these processes both possess large tertiary treatment installation bases for TSS and basic TP removal, the ultra-low level TP work is currently emerging following extensive R&D efforts and pilot testing. The processes are attractive as supplemental treatment with a small footprint that can often fit into the existing hydraulic profile. The discussion will provide a review of the technologies, current design methodology, and current installations.
