National Employment Lawyers Association/New York - Event Information

Event Name:NELA Nite on Compassion Fatigue: Managing the Emotional Challenges of Lawyering
Description:Compassion Fatigue: Managing the Emotional Challenges of Lawyering

Clients with employment cases often come to us with painful stories of psychological, physical and financial abuse in the workplace. As advocates, we may share in their heartbreak, the toll of, and sometimes the disappointments of, litigating on their behalf. Lawyers in many client-based areas of law suffer long-term behavioral and emotional responses from exposure to emotionally fraught cases.

Panelists Vicki Light and Brad Martin, staff attorneys from The Legal Aid Society and members of The Legal Aid Society Juvenile Rights Practice’s Secondary Trauma Stress Interdisciplinary Committee, will share their insight, the result of 10 years of study and work, on Secondary Trauma Stress, Vicarious Trauma and Burnout and how they affect lawyers working in their offices. They are both active in JRP’s multi-disciplinary committee which focuses on evaluating, educating about and alleviating Secondary Trauma Stress.
