Many industries discharge effluents that contain metals above the levels allowed for discharge to POTWs. There are a number of technologies available to remove metals to acceptable discharge levels. These include precipitation with various anions, a high level of filtration, ion exchange, carbon adsorption and few other lesser applied technologies. Selection of the proper treatment technology is dependent upon the valence of the metal, the other constituents dissolve in the water matrix, the state the metal is in, the wastewater pH, and the amount of suspended solids present. This presentation will review these factors and discuss the importance of each. Other factors requiring consideration, including the effluent requirements. Case histories of removing metals concentrations of 10 to 50 mg/l to below permit limits will be presented as examples of the proper application of commonly used processes.
