Event Description
Join Metro Water Recovery at their Hite Facility for a technical luncheon focusing on the optimization of phosphorus recovery, impacts on dewatering and biosolids and startup of the new Biosolids Dewatering and Storage Facility (BDSF). Metro’s phosphorus recovery system began operating in 2020 and has successfully maintained consistent soluble phosphorous transformation >90%. However, additional optimization efforts were required to maximize struvite separation, determine online instrumentation, and minimize alkalinity loss. Following these optimizations, Metro’s Technology and Innovation Department conducted in-depth evaluations of cost and chemical usage, which revealed new opportunities for optimizing polymer and dewatering processes and allowing for more efficient operational practices. The presentation will discuss ongoing polymer optimization concepts and data, including standardized centrifuge testing, and how these efforts contribute to improved solids handling. Additionally, broader objectives of enhancing performance across biosolids handling and hauling processes will be addressed, drawing insights from past initiatives and reporting.

Presenters:
Dr. Rudy Maltos (MWR Technology and Innovation – Process Engineering):  Rudy Maltos received his PhD at Colorado School of Mines and is currently a process engineer at Metro Water Recovery. His current projects focus on densifying activated sludge, phosphorus recovery via chemical precipitation, and dewatering optimization.
Rylee Rubino (MWR Technology and Innovation – Data Analytics):  Rylee has been with Metro Water Recovery for about 18 months, starting as a temporary engineer in applied research, and then moving to her current roll of data analytics engineer. Rylee creates visualizations of process data to inform decision making at Metro and creates tools for engineering calculations and data transformation. Prior to joining Metro, Rylee spent five years as a design engineer for a manufacturer in the stormwater sector.

Luncheon Format and Location:
This luncheon will be held at the Administration Building at the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District’s (MWRD’s) Robert W. Hite Treatment Facility. From I-25, exit at 58th Avenue and head east for ¼ mile to the intersection with Washington St. Turn left onto Washington Street to head north about ¾ mile to the intersection with 64th Ave. Turn right and follow 64th avenue about 1 mile to the end of the road at York Street. Jog to the left on York Street and then to the right to the main entrance to the Hite Facility. Identification will be needed to proceed beyond the security guard station. Proceed from there and head left to the Administration Building; the luncheon will be hosted in the Metro Boardroom Conference Room. PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING IDENTIFICATION (Driver’s License, State ID, or Passport) TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE CAMPUS AT THE SECURITY GATE. Identification is required for all passengers in the vehicle.

Registration:
Check-in at the site is from 11:30 am to 12:00 pm. The presentation will begin shortly thereafter.
Registration fee for this luncheon is $30 for members (of either RMWEA or RMSAWWA), and $35 for non-members. Retired folks and students will be charged $20. Registration and payment for TAC luncheons is only handled online at: TAC Registration.  Registration may be made for a single attendee or for multiple attendees in a group. The deadline for registration is 4 pm on Tuesday, May 14.  Due to security requirements at Metro, registrations will not be accepted after 4 pm on Tuesday. If you are requesting a special lunch (e.g., vegetarian) please email your request to steve.polson@jacobs.com. Attendance is limited to 50 registrants, so sign up early. Please also note that the deadline for cancelling and receiving a refund of the registration fee is also 4 pm on Tuesday, May. 14.
