"National Legislative Update"

Speaker: Paul was born and raised in Racine, Wisconsin.  He received a BS in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin Whitewater.  Paul served as an aide to former U.S. Congressman Les Aspin. Currently, Paul is co-owner of the lobbying firm Miller/Wenhold Capitol Strategies located in Fairfax, Virginia near the Nation’s Capital.  Paul specializes in healthcare, transportation, government contracts, and ethics.  He also has extensive experience in small business issues, association related matters and management, construction industry, social media, grassroots training, and crisis management.   Paul also devotes a significant amount of time to pro bono causes. In addition to his work for Miller/Wenhold, Paul was elected as the youngest President of the American League of Lobbyists (A.L.L.), the national association representing the lobbying profession.  In 2005-2006 Paul presided over the Jack Abramoff scandal for the profession and served as its voice.  Today he currently serves as the President and founder of the National Institute For Lobbying & Ethics, which has become the gold standard for the profession.Paul’s vast experience in the lobbying profession led him in January of 2006 to introduce the first lobbying certificate program for the profession – a program designed to help lobbyists keep pace with the profession and its standards. Paul was instrumental in shaping the debate on lobbying reform in 2006 and 2007.  As chief spokesman for the profession, Paul met with leaders from both parties on the issue of reform.  He has testified before both the House and Senate and has appeared on most television programs educating the public on the issue of lobbying and proposed changes to the Lobbying Disclosure Act.  He has been a tireless champion in the fight to protect every citizen’s first amendment right to petition their government through lobbying activities.  These efforts continue today through his work with NILE and their efforts to help the profession keep pace with the changes in how “lobbying” is done today. Paul has appeared on NBC Nightly News, ABC News, C-Span, CNN, MSNBC, The News Hour with Jim Lehr, and Lou Dobbs discussing ethics and transparency issues. Paul also is the founder and chairman of the Hoops for Youth Foundation, which pits members of Congress against lobbyists each year in an effort to raise money for children's charities in the Washington, D.C. area. To date this event has raised over $3 million. Paul also served 12-years on his alma mater’s Dean’s Advisory Board at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater.
