Event Description
Don’t miss this Innovative Technologies Dinner and an opportunity to earn 1 PDH credit!
Come to hear an engaging presentation by Dr. Kumar of the MWRDG titled “Charting a Sustainable Future: The Role of Technological Innovations in Realizing the Goals of the MWRD’s Climate Action Plan” and enjoy an exquisite meal at Labriola (located downtown Chicago east of Michigan Ave and two blocks north of the Chicago River). Networking and Halloween fun will also be available 😊
Dr. Kumar will present the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago's (MWRD) innovative Climate Action Plan and its forward-thinking strategy for addressing climate change in wastewater treatment and stormwater management. The presentation will highlight MWRD’s ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets, comprehensive carbon footprint reduction methodologies, and adaptive strategies for infrastructure and operations in response to climate risks. A key focus will be the current status and development of technologies aimed at mitigating hard-to-abate process emissions. Wastewater treatment facilities face significant challenges in reducing process-related emissions, such as nitrous oxide and methane, which are potent greenhouse gases. These emissions are difficult to capture and control due to the complexity of biological treatment processes. Technologies like advanced anaerobic digestion, optimized aeration systems, and carbon capture are being explored, but their implementation faces hurdles such as cost, scalability, and the need for robust regulatory frameworks. This session is designed for professionals in the water sector, environmental scientists, and policymakers interested in data-driven solutions for regional climate resilience.
Date: Thursday, October 17, 6:00 – 9:00 pm
Location: Labriola Chicago (www.labriolacafe.com) 535 N Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60611
Cost: $75 members, $90 non-members, $35 students
