Shannon Woller, 2025 IPA President
There s nothing better than a good book. Well, there probably are better things out there like antibiotics and not-for-profits doing great work but I really do love a good book. Getting to hear an author’s perspective and the opportunity to learn, to be challenged, and to do better as a result is the great promise of a well-written text.
To that end, during my time as IPA President, I’ll be hosting a recurring book club for IPA members. The purpose of the book club will be to expose readers to a variety of topics germane to psychology, then come together to discuss the content of the book in a semi-structured environment. The books will always be non-fiction, and the meetings will be focused on discussion around questions derived from the text. The goal is for participants to read the book, enjoy the discussion, and come away with knowledge we can use to make ourselves better as psychologists.
The first President’s book club was held on 1/30/2025 and covered Amanda Ripley’s book High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped and How We Get Out. The book got strong reviews from everyone who read it. Readers felt the book was insightful, thought-provoking, highly relevant to current events, and definitely worth the read. The group discussed ways to identify high conflict when it occurs. We also discussed how we could work toward productive conversations when high conflict is involved including being mindful of and managing our own emotional responses to the conflict, not engaging in us-them/good side-bad side thinking no matter how tempting, minimizing the impact of people who are benefiting from or stoking the conflict, being curious about the opinions and positions of people who are seem opposite of our own, avoiding categories or labels for other people because this reinforces us/them thinking, and redoubling our efforts to use adaptive communication skills for speaking and listening when in challenging conversations.
Our next book will be A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan’s Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them by Timothy Egan. We will meet on Monday, 3/10/2025 from 12:00-1:00pm via Zoom. This retelling of historical events hits close to home and many locations referenced in the book will be very familiar to IPA members. Please be advised this book does include depictions of violence and sexual violence which may be challenging to read.
