Program Description: Internship 101 Applications
During this virtual event, participants will hear about the personal experiences of Indiana clinical and counseling psychology doctoral students who have gone through the APPICA internship application process and successfully matched. This meeting will be presented in a moderated panel format, also featuring the expertise of Dr. Anna Merrill of Indiana University.
Moderator: Sydney Majka, IPA Student Committee Chair
Sydney Majka, B.A. is currently a second-year doctoral student in Ball State University's Counseling Psychology Ph.D program, and serves as the chair of the IPA Student Committee. Sydney completed a masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Ball State University in 2023, and her undergraduate degree in Psychology at DePauw University in 2021. Currently, Sydney 's research and clinical interests are focused on neurodiverse populations. She is completing an external practicum placement conducting autism assessments with children, and her dissertation will focus on the changes in the diagnostic criteria for ASD that occurred from DSM 4 to DSM 5. Outside of the classroom, Sydney enjoys spending time with friends and family, reading, baking, and watersports.

Panelist Bio: Jeremy Cottle, M.A.
Jeremy Cottle, M.A., is the current Pediatric Neuropsychology track predoctoral intern at IU School of Medicine, where he matched last year. Jeremy completed his undergraduate degree at Hamilton College, and he is currently a sixth-year doctoral student in the Medical/Clinical Psychology PhD program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Jeremy's clinical and research interests include autism spectrum disorder phenotype in special populations, issues in neuropsychological assessment, and intervention considerations in neurodevelopmental disabilities. Jeremy recently participated in the neuropsychology postdoctoral program match through APPCN and will be completing his postdoctoral fellowship in pediatric neuropsychology at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Outside of the hospital, Jeremy enjoys watching live music, reading, playing sports, and entertaining his dog.

Panelist Bio: Jack Komer, M.S.Ed.
Jack Komer, M.S.Ed. is a fourth-year doctoral student in the School Psychology PhD program at Indiana University Bloomington and recently matched at MetroHealth Medical Center's APPIC/APA internship program within their Pediatric Psychology track. Passionate about providing accessible, trauma-informed and culturally responsive mental health care to underserved populations, at IU, Jack has served as a secondary intervention team lead on a U.S. Department of Education grant providing mental health services to a rural school corporation. Jack's personal clinical interests and research are in supporting sexual and gender minority youth, and he is using grounded theory to construct a more inclusive model of minority stress for gender minority youth as part of his dissertation. Clinically, he is currently completing external practica at Riley Hospital for Children's Gender Health program and Indiana Youth Group's free therapy program for sexual and gender minority youth/young adults. At the national level, Jack serves as a graduate student representative for the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity committee and as a writing group member for NASP's upcoming position statement on "Safe and Supportive Schools for Sexual and Gender Minority Students".

Panelist Bio: Hanna S. Lim, MSEd
Hanna S. Lim, MSEd, is a 4th year PhD candidate in school psychology at Indiana University, where she also obtained her school psychology master’s degree in 2023. Hanna completed her bachelor’s degree in applied psychology at the City University of Hong Kong in 2018. Her research is centered on culturally responsive educational practices as a means to empower culturally and linguistically diverse students and their families. Hanna’s dissertation explores the experiences of international students in US-based school psychology programs. Her practicum experiences include schools, interprofessional community health projects, and a private practice for neuropsychological testing and individual therapy. She matched to the Connections Internship Consortium in Illinois. Hanna makes sure to nourish her other identities outside of academia through cooking, reading, music, and connecting with her loved ones overseas.

Panelist Bio: Brandon Miller
Brandon is a doctoral candidate in the Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program at Ball State University. He earned master's degrees in Clinical Psychology and Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Ball State in 2022. He matched to the Fargo VA Health Care System for his predoctoral internship. His clinical experiences at a neuropsychological private practice, hospital-based outpatient clinic, community mental health clinic, and university counseling center have encompassed psychological and neuropsychological assessment, short and long term therapy, and an emphasis in working with sexual and gender minorities. His dissertation explores factors that contribute to psychological resilience among gay men. Beyond the classroom, he enjoys camping, hiking, video games, cooking, and baking.
Brandon Miller
Panelist Bio: Jackie Paiz, M.S. Ed.
Jackie Paiz, M.S. Ed. is currently a fifth-year doctoral student in Indiana University Bloomington's Counseling Psychology PhD program. Jackie completed a master's degree in Learning and Developmental Sciences (Counseling track) en route to her PhD at IUB, and her undergraduate degree in Psychology & Spanish at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. Currently, Jackie's research and clinical interests are focused on the intersection of mental health implementation and holistic health, with emphasis on promoting equitable access to mental health care. She is an Assistant Director at the Counseling and Wellness Clinic (CWC), her department's training clinic for both master's and doctoral level counseling psychology students and her dissertation focuses on Latine graduate student's narratives about mental health treatment and therapy. Outside of the classroom, Jackie enjoys reading, journaling, and taking care of her house plants.
