Outline of the Session:

  • Introduction:  How do you teach social programming for autistic students in your school?  
  • Social Programming for Autistic Students - Evidence Based or EBP (Evidence Based Practice) Strategies - Review & Discuss
  • Discuss and share results of study:  Social Communication and Skills Programming for Autistic Students in Schools: An Examination of the Evidence and Implementation
    • Survey Results
    • Social Curriculum Information Database for autistic students
  • Group Q&A

Course Description:

First we will discuss participants’ current practices for implementing social programming. Next, research findings will be presented on how social curricula are classified as fully evidence-based, emerging evidence-based, or not evidence based including the criteria used for evaluation. Then key insights from the survey results of the social programming study will be reviewed (time permitting). We will close with a dedicated 10 - 15  minutes to walk through the Social Curriculum Database - what it is and how to use it and have Q&A.
 

Learning Objectives:
After this session, the learner will be able to:

  1. Determine understanding of different social skill curricula and their relationship to EBP for autistic students 
  2. Reflect and analyze on SLP current practices for social programming implementation within their schools
  3. Understand the difference evidence based curricula for social skills implementation in the classroom vs evidence based practice (EBP) strategies and implications for the classroom 
  4. Increase awareness regarding Social Curricula availability for autistic students in schools
