Event Description
Join the Mid-Atlantic Biosolids Association for a webinar that will demystify greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting and inventory management in wastewater, with an emphasis on solids treatment and biosolids handling. As our industry faces increasing pressure to quantify and reduce carbon footprints, this session offers a general roadmap—from mastering the basic principles of emission types to navigating the unique challenges of inventory maintenance, and highlighting the best state of practice in measurement informed inventories. Attendees will gain a perspective on the "greenlighting" process through a candid case study from DC Water's Blue Plains AWWTP, detailing their specific drivers, goals, and the day-to-day realities of managing GHG data. Whether you are an operator, utility leader, or consultant, this webinar will provide the technical solutions and forward-looking trends necessary to steer your organization toward a sustainable, climate-ready future.

Moderator: Christian Chiodo, PE, Brown and Caldwell

Presentation 1:Using GHG Accounting to Drive Sustainability at WRRFs
Water resource recovery facilities are significant contributors to municipal greenhouse gas emissions, yet many utilities lack the tools or frameworks to quantify and act on their emissions profile. This session will walk through GHG accounting fundamentals including scopes, emission sources, and the data hierarchy from indicator-based estimates to direct measurement, with a focus on fugitive methane and nitrous oxide from both the liquid and solids treatment trains. A particular emphasis will be placed on biosolids management as a major driver of facility-level GHG emissions, covering anaerobic digestion, thermal treatment, and end-use pathways including landfilling, land application, and composting. The session will also cover attribution versus project-based accounting, the state of measurement-informed inventories and current WRF research advancing the field, and practical pathways for utilities of any size to get started, including available tools, protocols, and funding opportunities.

Speaker: Steve Lobo PE, ENV SP; Environmental Engineer; Brown and Caldwell

Presentation 2: DC Waters Carbon Inventory
DC Water maintains an authority wide carbon inventory, this presentation will go into the origin of the inventory, some of the core process emission categories in the waste system and the trends observed as processes change and grow within Blue Plains Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Speaker: James Fotouhi, Program Manager - Biosolids, DC Water and Sewer Authority
