Supervising Research Chemist - Louisville, KY 

Position Description: 
Supervises the MSD laboratory organics section including sample preparation, instrumentation, data generation, validation and reporting. Provides direct supervision to laboratory technicians. Schedules staff hours, overtime, and performs timesheet submittals. Serves as a liaison for the laboratory regarding laboratory operations and related MSD support functions. Provides technical support, troubleshooting and maintenance to analytical instrumentation, process control, stream monitoring and industrial waste sections of the laboratory. Advises management regarding strategic planning for the laboratory.  


Duties/Responsibilities: 
Supervises laboratory technicians. Supervises the organics section within the MSD Lab. Provides guidance within all laboratory sections regarding instrument operation and data generation. Provides technical support and training for process control, industrial waste and streams monitoring labs. Investigates and implements new laboratory processes and procedures, including research and MSD innovation projects. Works with the laboratory QA Specialist to ensure proper documentation and implementation of laboratory methods following the KYDOW laboratory certification requirements. Receives supplies via SAP. Prepares PMDFs for board approval and supporting reports for new instrumentation. Performs all LIMS administrator duties including, but not limited to, monthly MOR report generation, KPDES upload preparation and review, data requests and other LIMS related projects. Follows accepted safety practices and rules. Performs other related duties as assigned or as judgment/necessity dictates.


Education/Experience/Skills Required: 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES NECESSARY TO THE WORK:
Knowledge of analytical chemistry techniques; knowledge of chromatography techniques, mass spectra interpretation and GC/MS and GC operation and maintenance; knowledge of statistical methods; knowledge of laboratory procedures and methods; skill in operating a PC and associated Windows environment software (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite, etc.); ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to work effectively under heavy surges in workload and deadline pressure; ability to exercise judgment and discretion; ability to supervise a diverse workforce; ability to work in a team environment; ability to perform complex calculations; ability to use atomic absorption spectrometer, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission, gas chromatograph and/or ion chromatograph; ability to work effectively under heavy, unpredictable surges in workload; ability to work various shifts and weekends.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor Degree in chemistry or a related field; five or more years of quality control and/or wastewater testing experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must have safe work and driving habits.


Salary: 
$61,692.80 - $94,889.60 Annually
