Position Description:

Work is performed under the direction of the Wastewater Plant Superintendent. Responsible for laboratory testing and procedures along with assisting in the management of the Wastewater Treatment Plant which includes planning, organizing, directing, inspecting and evaluating the work of other employees.


Duties/Responsibilities:

Daily laboratory testing, which includes sampling, analysis, and recording analytical data. Uses collected data to make and determine the daily operational adjustments needed to insure the optimum performance of the wastewater treatment plant. Assists in supervising and coordinating the daily operation, maintenance, and safety compliance at the wastewater treatment plant. Helps plan, budget and manage expenditures. Evaluates personnel; directs maintenance and repair of the wastewater plant; plans and schedules work through operators, inspects work; investigates problems and complaints. Work includes, supervising employees, collecting and analyzing raw and finished wastewater for biological, chemical, and physical properties requiring the specific protocol for collection, transportation and analysis. Sample collection may involve potentially hazardous
site entries involving potential chemical, electrical, and other physical hazards. Primary duties involve interpreting the following: test results, chart recorders, gauge readings, chemical analyzers and flow meters in order to determine processing requirements. Duties also include the checking and the servicing of the mechanical and electrical equipment associated with a wastewater treatment plant. Exercises independent judgment and action. Subject to call outs as scheduled by the Superintendent. Performs related duties as required.


Education/Experience/Skills Required:

Knowledge of the principles and aims of the wastewater plant administration
Knowledge of water laboratory operational procedures, technology, terminology, and equipment
Knowledge of the identity, location and appropriate operation of all safety equipment, emergency procedures and use of material safety data sheets
Ability to make mathematical computations related to performing of wastewater laboratory tests required by State and Federal regulations
Ability to detect alarms by indicators and to adjust and calibrate equipment
Ability to detect odors and colors indicative of laboratory test points, hazardous gasses and upset conditions
Ability to sense vibrations and temperature by touch and to make depth perceptions
Ability to serve in an "on call" status possibly requiring working nights and weekends
Ability to work nights and weekends when required
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and the public

QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in biology or a closely related field preferred. Requires high school education or equivalent, a current Tennessee Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators License or ability to obtain at the end of two years, four years' experience at a wastewater treatment facility preferred, and possession of a valid driver's license.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Requires physical agility in order to access sites with some physical barriers. Involves climbing, lifting, bending, etc. Ability to detect alarms, odors and color variations and vibrations and temperatures by touch. Must be able to use equipment and tools related to laboratory operations. Must be able to effectively plan, organize, direct, inspect and evaluate the work of others, compile records and make reports. Ability to make quick decisions requiring independent judgment. Must be able to lift 100 pounds.


Salary:
$50,419.00-$75,649.00
