Job Summary

Shenandoah County is recruiting to fill an opening for Utility Plant Operator. The opening is at the Toms Brook - Maurertown Sanitary District. The Utility Plant Operator performs semi-skilled work operating a water or wastewater treatment plant; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Utility Plant Chief Operator.



Essential Job Functions

Assists with the operation of water and wastewater treatment plants; performing tests; ensuring proper plant operation; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.
Makes regular inspection of plant and equipment to ascertain that it is in proper operation and takes necessary corrective actions.
Assists with water and sewer line repairs and leak detection mitigation.
Assists with the maintenance, repairs, and operations of all remote pump stations.
Reads meters, gauges, and dials and documents readings accordingly.
Performs grounds keeping and housekeeping duties.
Calibrates testing meters; inventories chemicals; unloads and stores supply deliveries.
Record retention and operational reporting to maintain regulatory compliance.
Responds to customer inquiries.
Additional Duties

Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as assigned.

Education and Experience

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and basic experience in the operation or maintenance of a water and/or wastewater treatment plant, water distribution system, sewer collection system, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Possession of Class IV Water or Wastewater licenses is preferred, or the willingness to obtain.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of water/wastewater facility operations, procedures, equipment and techniques.
Knowledge of basic English and Mathematics.
Knowledge of the organization and functions of the department and of general administrative policies and procedures.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of programs for the purposes of creating documents, graphs, presentations, databases and spreadsheets, or the ability to learn.
Knowledge of the general maintenance requirements of a water or wastewater treatment plant.
Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing in a highly interactive team-oriented work environment.
Ability to operate work-related equipment.
Ability to detect flaws in the operation of equipment and to determine proper remedial measures and mechanical aptitude.
Ability to keep records and prepare reports.
Ability to perform and organize work independently.
Ability to prepare effective correspondence on routine matters and to perform routine office management details without referral to supervisor.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance at work.
Physical Demands

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and feeling; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm’s length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work.

Work Environment

The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens or hazardous chemicals and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.



The annual starting pay range for the FLSA Non-Exempt position of Utility Plant Operator is $41,902.81 - $49,152.00. commensurate with qualifications, experience, and internal equity. The County offers an excellent benefits package, including Virginia Retirement System, health and dental insurance, vacation and sick leave, and holidays. The successful candidate must pass a pre-employment, post-offer drug screening and background check.
