1/20/2022 -1/20/2022 | Please join us for a free zoom chat where participants will discuss trauma experienced by unaccompanied minors pre/during/post migration, and potential mental health issues they face. In addition, we will discuss ways to engage youth in addressing mental health issues (overcoming stigma, understanding cultural interpretations of mental health and expectations of therapy) and ways to build resilience. Please come and share ideas and questions as we hope to stimulate conversation with people who provide mental health services to unaccompanied migrant youth. 1/23/2022 -1/23/2022 | This is the link to register for either of APSAC's Pre Conference Institutes at the San Diego International Conference on Child and Family Maltreatment. Intrafamilial Child Torture: An Emerging Category of Child Maltreatment (this event will be presented and attended virtually) This workshop will explore what we know from case data about children who suffer extreme, severe, and often protracted child maltreatment in their families. We have elected to refer to these children as victims of intrafamilial child torture, because their experiences and the developmental consequences have much in common with child torture in other settings. This workshop will explore the lived experiences of child victims, review their developmental challenges and treatment needs, explore appropriate treatment modalities for victims of severe developmental trauma, and present the experiences of legal and child’s rights advocates endeavoring to protect them. The goal is to raise awareness and promote both dialogue and data collection to ultimately help professionals in all disciplines intervene more effectively to protect and serve these children. Presenters: Pamela Miller, JD, MSW, LISW-S; Judith S. Rycus, PhD, MSW; Lucien Lombardo, PhD; Suzanna Tiapula, JD; Stacie Schrieffer LeBlanc, JD, MEd; Viola Vaughan-Eden, PhD, MJ, LCSW Adapting Forensic Interviews for Children who do not Speak (this event will be presented and attended in person) Description: This workshop is intended for forensic interviewers who want to learn about interviewing children who do not speak or who are considered “non-verbal.” Through this workshop, participants will have increased understanding of verbal behavior and communication methods; increased knowledge of common biases regarding communicating with children who do not speak; increased knowledge of pre-interview considerations when preparing to interview a child who does not speak; and learn reliable and legally defensible techniques that can be applied in forensic interviews with these children. Participants will have opportunities to apply what they have learned through class and small group activities. This training is founded in forensic interviewing best practices with considerations and adaptations to account for individuals who do not speak, use gestures, use a communication device, or speak few words. Presenter: Kate Homan, MS; Julie Kenniston, MSW, LISW Please note that you will only be able to register for one of these Institutes, as they occur at the same time. You will be prompted in the registration process to select the institute you'll be attending. more info... |
