Demystifying and Applying Digital Twins

Luncheon description:
Digital Twins have become a hot topic in the water and wastewater market, but there are misconceptions about what they are and how they work. In this presentation, attendees with gain a clear definition and understanding of what a digital twin is and will receive a primer on the Smart Water Networks Forum’s (SWAN) Digital Twin Readiness Guide. Clean Water Services (CWS) will be presented as a case study for implementing digital twin technology in their organization including data source considerations, required functionalities, future state vision, skillset and expertise needs/gaps, optional tools, data analytics implementation, system architecture, cost considerations, technology considerations, and more. CWC is a research-savvy and progressive-minded utility that serves more than 600,000 people in the Portland, Oregon urban area and is a model for digital twin implementation.

Speakers
Dr. Ting Lu is the Business Practice Leader at Clean Water Services in Hillsboro, Oregon. Ting leads the digital technology strategy development, and directs research and innovation of integrated water resource technology and research. Ting is currently serving as the second vice chair on the Utility Management Committee and actively participate in Intelligent Water Technology committee at WEF. Before joining Clean Water Services, Ting worked for the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati and Black & Veatch, where she led the integrated planning effort and developed a quantitative and innovative water quality program with smart sensors and data analytics. Ting has authored over 100 papers and presentations nationally and internationally and coauthored several book chapters for the Water Environment Federation. She received her Ph.D. at the University of Cincinnati.

Michael Karl is an experienced water and wastewater executive and chairs the SWAN's Americas Alliance. He is also Brown and Caldwell's National Optimization Services Leader, where he works with utilities to help them run their operations and organization more efficiently, often through digitally enabled solutions. Mike has a proven track record in the development and implementation of digitally enabled solutions that improve organizational efficiency.

Luncheon Format:
This luncheon will be conducted online. Sorry, you must bring your own lunch. 😊 Instructions on how to register are in the next paragraph. The presentation will begin at 12 noon on the above date (Mountain time, of course). The presentation will be broadcast using Microsoft Teams. Folks who have registered for the luncheon will receive an email the day before with a link to the meeting. Please be sure your microphone is muted and camera turned off when you join the meeting. The first is obvious and the latter is to reduce bandwidth required.

Registration:
TAC Registration: A registration fee of $10 is being imposed for all attendees. This is reduced from our typical fee to reflect the online nature of the event. Registration and payment for TAC luncheons will be handled as in the past on line at: TAC Registration. Registration may be made for a single attendee or for multiple attendees in a group. It is requested that each individual in a group either register individually or are included in the count for a group registration, and that multiple parties are not partaking in the presentation without registering. The registration deadline for this event is Wednesday, March 22, at 3:00 pm MST. We will send out the link for the luncheon to the email addresses per the registration site by the end of the day on Wednesday. Please note the Teams program does not need to be installed on your computer to participate. When you click the link provided in the email, an option to participate through your browser is offered. There will also be a call-in number, but it is hoped that nobody is forced to do that, as you will only receive the audio.
