TAC Presentation

Metro Water Recovery’s Innovative Approach to Meeting Temperature Regulations

Thursday, April 20, 2023

Luncheon Description:
In 2007, the Water Quality Control Commission adopted temperature standards for cold and warm water streams to protect aquatic life from adverse thermal effects. Metro’s Northern Treatment Plant (NTP) discharge permit requires the facility to meet the new temperature standard by April 1, 2026. In response, NTP evaluated numerous cooling technologies and selected a single-pass cooling tower for demonstration testing.

The demonstration cooling tower began operation in January 2023 and will be running through May 2023. The presentation will discuss process required to get to the demonstration phase, testing results to date, and operational and maintenance challenges. Following the presentation, there will be a tour of the cooling tower demonstration facility.

Presenter Bio: Link Mueller
Link Mueller is a Senior Wastewater Process Engineer in the Technology and Innovation Department at Metro Water Recovery (Metro). He has 17 years of experience in design, construction, and operations of wastewater treatment facilities, the last 2 years at Metro. Link’s focus is on treatment plant research, optimization, and supporting Operations and Maintenance personnel. He received his undergraduate degree civil engineering from Iowa State University and master’s degree in civil engineering (Environmental) from Colorado State University. Link also maintains a Professional Engineers license and a Class A Wastewater Operator’s License for the State of Colorado.

Luncheon Format and Location:
This month’s luncheon will be held at the Northern Treatment Plant Visitor Center (Metro Water Recovery). Here is a link to Google Maps:  Map Link
