The RMWEA Annual WEFTEC Reception returns to Chicago on Sunday, October 1, 2023.   This event is sponsored by:  Walker Process Equipment, Leopold, Sanitaire, WEDECO, Flygt, Chart Water Group, Federal Screen, and Cogent.

The WEFTEC Reception is a popular event, giving the conference attendees a place to connect with colleagues from the RMWEA and to wish our FOUR Operations Challenge Teams good luck in their competitions! This year, RMWEA will be represented by Metro Water Recovery's Elevated Ops, City of Westminster's Sewercide Squad and Metro Water Recovery's Double Duty, and South Platte Renew's Commode Commandos.

This year’s venue returns to  Timothy O'Tooles Pub at 7622 North Fairbanks Ct, Chicago. The fun will begin at 3pm with a buffet of Hors d'oeuvres and a bar of house well drinks, beers, and sodas.

We are doing the Football Pool online this year to make it easier to manage, plus it will give anyone that is unable to attend a chance to get in on the funt.  We have two set up to participate in.  The links are below, when the screen comes up, don't click on anything not even the BIG RED NEXT button, just scroll down the page until you see the Squares game.  Click on which squares you want to purchase, click on as many as you want.  They are $5 a square.  Make sure you put your name, phone number and email so we can get money to you if you win. Once you choose the squares you want, you can Venmo to @Rmweavenmo22  or @Brenda-Adams-170.  Type Square # / Game in Venmo comments ; ie.  75 Broncos .  Hurry before they sell out.  Feel free to share....

We will award Half Time and Final for each game. 1/2 to Winner and 1/2 to support the RMWEA Operations Challenge Program.  If you have any questions or problems, reach out to Brenda Adams at, BAdams@metrowaterrecovery.com or 303-918-3448

Wastewater Disinfection with Peracids: Update on PAA and PFA and advanced PAA dosing at Metro Water Recovery

Wednesday, October 25, 2023

Luncheon Description:
Industry drivers are pushing water resource recovery facilities (WRRF) to consider alternative disinfectants. These drivers include improved health and safety for workers, improved safety for the community, improved public health protection via increased effectiveness for viral inactivation and disinfection byproduct control, and to improve simplicity of operations.

This presentation delves into the fascinating realm of wastewater disinfection and explores the use of alternative chemical disinfectants and their integration with advanced dose control systems. We will provide an overview of peracids for wastewater disinfection, including peracetic acid (PAA) and performic acid (PFA). We will also examine the challenges, breakthroughs, and lessons learned from implementing advanced dose control strategies with PAA disinfection at Metro Water Recovery. This case study highlights the potential of advanced dose control for disinfection using any chemical disinfectant (including sodium hypochlorite) and will share practical challenges.

  • The presentation will also include an overview of advanced dose control systems.
  • The presentation will be useful to audience members interested in PAA or PFA, to those interested in advanced dose control and data analytics, or those interested in potentially saving cost in existing chemical systems such as those using sodium hypochlorite. In other words, by improving how chemical dosing can be carried out, these alternatives could help WRRFs that use chemical disinfection save cost and chemical, even if they do not need to consider adopting PFA or PAA in the future.
  • Finally, Metro Water Recovery will present first-hand their challenges, breakthroughs, and lessons learned with their PAA piloting and full-scale demonstration experiences.
