The Town of Erie has been experiencing significant growth over the last decade which required expansion of the North Water Reclamation Facility sooner than anticipated. A master plan completed in 2018 recommended expansion to their liquid and solid stream treatment processes. A third aeration train was added in addition to automated controls, additional aeration capacity, and extending the existing aeration basins.

In addition to the liquid stream improvements, a new solids handling process was included as part of the project to replace an existing Class A biosolids stabilization treatment system with an Autothermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion (ATAD) process and a new dewatering facility for solids handling. The solids handling selection process will be discussed including the economic and non-economic evaluation, a comparison of the results after the new facility was brought online from the existing, and construction and start-up for the facility.

The presentation and tour will cover the challenges of construction, the surprises found at the existing aeration basins and overview of the construction project which extended through COVID from 2020 to 2024. How did this project remain within budget dealing with the challenges such as supply chain issues and labor availability during COVID? How do you continue to treat while working on extending the existing basins? Come to the event to find out how this was accomplished.

Presenters: Gina MacPhee, HDR and Jon Coyle, Town of Erie
Gina is a senior process engineer with experience in the study, design, and construction of mechanical treatment systems with a focus on solids handling and wastewater treatment. She’s been with HDR for 17 years. She graduated with a Civil Engineering degree and Masters in Environmental Engineering. She worked as the lead design manager and field engineer throughout the Erie NWRF construction project.

Jon Coyle is the Chief Wastewater Plant Operator for the Town of Erie. He has been with the Town for 12 years and is a Colorado and Town of Erie native.
