Please join us for the February 27, 2025, TAC luncheon to learn more about innovations being investigated to supercharge the sludge treatment process. These intensified sludge treatment processes aim to stabilize solids at a higher rate and/or in a smaller footprint, increase volatile solids reduction and biogas production, and achieve superior performance in a process configuration that is more like conventional processes than more complex processes such as thermal hydrolysis processes (THP) on the market today. The two processes to be highlighted are IntensiCarb™ and the Microbial Hydrolysis Process (MHP). The IntensiCarb™ process intensifies anaerobic digestion by decoupling solids retention time (SRT) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) utilizing vacuum evaporation to drive off water. This process increases capacity and reduces the impact of toxic metabolic byproducts through extraction, such as ammonia-N, while recovering additional methane. The microbial hydrolysis process (MHP) consists of feeding digestate from an anaerobic digester to a hydrolysis tank populated with caldicellulosiruptor bescii (CB), for a hydraulic retention time of two or more days at 75°C. The CB hyper-thermophilic bacteria and associated enzymes hydrolyze cellulose and other volatile solids (VS) and produce volatile fatty acids (VFA) in an anaerobic, neutral pH reactor. These VFA and VS are returned to the anaerobic digester where methanogens convert them into biogas.

Check-in at the site is from 11:30 am to 12:00 pm. The presentation will begin shortly thereafter.
Registration fee for this luncheon is $30 for members (of either RMWEA or RMSAWWA), and $35 for non-members. Retired folks and students will be charged $20. Registration and payment for TAC luncheons will be handled online. Registration may be made for a single attendee or for multiple attendees in a group. The deadline for registration is 4 pm on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Due to security requirements at Metro, registrations will not be accepted after 4 pm on Tuesday. If you are requesting a special lunch (e.g., vegetarian) please email your request to srpolson53@gmail.com. Attendance is limited to 50 registrants, so sign up early. Please also note that the deadline for cancelling and receiving a refund of the registration fee is also 4 pm on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

This luncheon will be held at the Administration Building at the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District’s (MWRD’s) Robert W. Hite Treatment Facility. From I-25, exit at 58th Avenue and head east for ¼ mile to the intersection with Washington St. Turn left onto Washington Street and head north about ¾ mile to the intersection with 64th Ave. Turn right and follow 64th Avenue about 1 mile to the end of the road at York Street. Jog to the left on York Street and then to the right to the main entrance to the Hite Facility. Identification will be needed to proceed beyond the security guard station. Proceed from there and head left to the Administration Building; the luncheon will be hosted in the Metro Boardroom Conference Room. PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING IDENTIFICATION (Driver’s License, State ID, or Passport) TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE CAMPUS AT THE SECURITY GATE. Note that identification is also required for all passengers in the vehicle.

Presenters:
We are fortunate to have Dr. Chris Muller and Dr. Dave Parry to present on innovations they are leading. Chris and Dave are two of North America’s preeminent sludge digestion innovators. Chris will present on IntensiCarb™ and Dave will present on the microbial hydrolysis process (MHP). Dr. Christopher Muller is the National Technology and Innovation Lead- Solids and Energy, for Brown and Caldwell (BC) based out of Andover, Massachusetts. In his roll, he works with his team to evaluate, develop and deploy emerging technologies and processes for the enhancement of solids process efficiency, resource and energy recovery.

Dr. David L. Parry has 45 years of experience and a global reputation for providing sustainable solutions to recover resources from wastewater. He is currently serving or has served as technical director for Jacobs on major water resource recovery projects around the world.
