Come join us for another great golf season with one of the best tournaments of the year, the “Operations Challenge” Golf Tournament. This year marks the 26th Annual event.
The tournament will be held on Monday, June 2, 2025, at Todd Creek Golf Course located in Thornton, Colorado. This Arthur Hills designed golf course provides a truly unique experience. The majestic Rocky Mountain backdrop coupled with undulating fairways and strategic placement of bunkers will provide a true test to every level of golfer.
Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Rocky Mountain Water Environment Association (RMWEA), a non-profit organization comprised of water quality professionals throughout Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico, and the RMWEA Operations Challenge. RMWEA’s goal will be to provide support to participate in the National Operations Challenge competition held during the Water Environment Federation's Annual Technical Conference & Exposition (WEFTEC).
Registration will open March 20, 2025, for Friends of Operations Challenge Golf only (limit only 1 team per registration). It will open for general registration on Thursday, March 27, 2024. Please check out our Golf Sponsor Levels as we have added some new and exciting sponsorship levels.
RMWEA participation at the national level would not be possible without the tremendous and continued financial support from local and regional sponsors that include treatment plant vendors, equipment manufacturers, contractors, engineering firms, and other organizations that directly or indirectly support the RMWEA. Sponsors who participate are recognized with a company logo or name displayed at the golf tournament. Additionally, recognition will be made at the awards banquet, on the RMWEA website, and at future Operations Challenge events. Sponsorship may be tax deductible. This presentation features an emerging AI microscopy platform called Maji, developed by two process engineers based in Israel. The technology uses artificial intelligence to analyze microscopic images of biomass, offering filament identification, process health assessments, and operational insights informed by submitted process data. This approach is particularly well-suited for facilities that have microscopes but lack in-house specialists to interpret microbiological trends. PureCycle has been piloting the platform since late 2023, conducting weekly monitoring by capturing and submitting sludge sample images and associated process data. The tool has shown potential for establishing baselines and proactively identifying biomass-related issues.
The presentation will provide an overview of the platform's capabilities, the microscopy-based monitoring methodology, and a look into the AI framework supporting the analysis. While still in early deployment, this type of AI/ML application demonstrates more immediate operational value than some digital tools that remain largely conceptual, such as soft sensors and digital twins. Similar technologies are already in use in the medical field—for instance, AI-powered microscopy is being used to identify diseases like malaria in remote areas where conventional lab resources are limited. The concept of remote, AI-enabled expert analysis is highly transferable and scalable to environmental and wastewater applications.

We are fortunate to have Offir and Sharon as our speakers for this month’s luncheon. Offir is an expert in AI and wastewater treatment with nearly 10 years of experience and a recent PhD submission from Tel Aviv University. Sharon is a seasoned systems engineer with extensive experience leading global water and environmental R&D projects.

Join the RMWEA Innovative Water Technology (IWT) Committee for a virtual seminar on Thursday, June 12, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM focused on creative nutrient management strategies. This two-hour session will feature presentations highlighting successful nutrient approaches implemented nationally, followed by a collaborative panel discussion with leading professionals from across Colorado.
Our goal is to spark meaningful conversations and explore how we can work together—across utilities, regions, and sectors—to protect water quality through practical, forward-thinking solutions. Presentations will include Chris Tabor (Hazen and Sawyer) discussing nutrient trading in the Chesapeake Bay, Haley Falconer (City of Boise) sharing Boise’s phosphorus removal strategies, and Dave Clark (HDR) presenting new approaches to nutrient management. The panel will bring together representatives from Metro Water Recovery, City of Longmont, City of Fort Collins, South Platte Renew, and Colorado Springs Utilities, creating a space to exchange ideas and collectively shape the future of nutrient management in Colorado. We hope to see you there and look forward to your voice in the conversation.
