Wayne Neilson (b. 1966) is a Tasmanian based freelance composer, arranger and music educator. He studied composition, Orchestration and Arranging with Nigel Butterley, one of Australia’s most respected composers.
Wayne has been a successful applicant for three Composer’s workshops, firstly in 1986 with the ABC Sinfonia, conducted by Patrick Thomas, writing and Orchestrating his first Orchestral piece. In 1988, he was chosen from among applicants throughout NSW to write a work for an ensemble workshop associated with the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music. In 1989, he was a successful applicant in The Seymour Group/2MBS FM Young Composers Workshop in Sydney directed by Richard Meale.
In 1990 he composed a collection of three songs "Of Fire and Ice" set to poems by three Australian poets. It captures the essence of the elements "Fire and Water" in their starkest state of being. This work was performed in 1990 at the Canberra School of Music in celebration of Don Banks. This work has since been arranged for Solo Cello and Piano.
In 1990 Wayne decided to focus his career on Music education, spending the last 28 years as a music educator, teaching composition, composing short pieces in the school education context, and arranging music for the various Concert and Stage bands and other ensembles he has directed. He is passionate about teaching young people composition, Orchestration and arranging, and empowers students to reach and exceed their goals. He has recently returned to full time Composition, Orchestration and arranging. He is a member of APRA/AMCOS.
