Profile:
Julie Simonds career in music spans some 35 years as an arranger, performer, orchestrator, copyist and composer. She was elected President of the Fellowship of Australian Composers, and was instrumental in gaining APRA funding for annual Composition Awards, to encourage Australian Composition.
Julie began broadcasting on fine music 102.5 (2MBS FM) in 2000 was elected a Director and then Chair. She is the Founder and Convenor of the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra/fine music 102.5 Young Composer of the Year, which is now in its 13th year and has a cash prize, public performance, broadcast and recording. She was the Music Editor of the ABC and Symphony Australia for 14 years, primarily working on new commissioned works for the 6 state symphony orchestras. Julie has orchestrated, arranged and copied works from The Suite from Voss by Richard Meale to the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games and many films.
In 2010 was appointed to Publicity and Special Projects Manager at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Central to this role is the administrative support she provided to the commissioned composers participating in the Centenary Commission Project between 2009 and 2015 in the Conservatoriums landmark centenary. She was appointed Classical Consultant representing G.Schirmer, Wilhelm Hansen and Chester Novello for Music Sales. Past President of the Fellowship of Australian Composers, and as a Represented Composer within the Australian Music Centre, Julie has a demonstrated passion for Australian artists and new compositional output. Her role allowed her to encourage and promote the creation of new works that educate and enhance the Conservatorium community both here and overseas. She was the consulting editor with author, Professor Peter McCallum in producing The Centenary of the Con - A History of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music 1915-2015. She is currently the Manager of the Music Program, Conservatorium High School and is a regular radio presenter on 2MBS fine music Sydney102.5.
