This training is geared toward Head Start Transportation Managers, Drivers and Monitors and will address issues of best practices with an emphasis on safety.
The event is designed to meet the four hour ODE Annual Inservice Training requirement for bus drivers and bus aides as described in Ohio’s Pupil Transportation Operation and Safety Rules (3301-83-10(B)).
Session Objectives:
Participants will identify components of rules that ensure safety in transportation services.
Participants will identify defensive driving strategies key to safety.
Participants will identify strategies to build positive relationships with families and children. IACET CEUs will be available for this event.
Pupil Transportation Updates 9:30 am to 10:30 am Jason Heilman, Ohio Department of Education, Office of Pupil Transportation
Mr. Heilman will cover Transportation Rule updates related to child securement, transporting children with disabilities, and personnel qualifications. He will also discuss bus inspection guidelines and other topics pertinent to Head Start transportation services. (Pupil Transportation Operation and Safety Rules)
Defensive Driving – What a new study reveals 10:45 am to 12:00 pm Understanding what cognitive distraction is and why professional drivers need to reduce this practice to enhance their defensive driving skills

Participants will look at how to anticipate scenarios and take preventive and defensive actions that make traffic accidents involving our buses a thing of the past. The session will cover the latest guidelines and content designed to support the safest conditions possible for children, ourselves, and others given the hazards on today’s roads. Connecting with Families and Young Children for Success 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm William DeMeo, Psychologist and Consultant
As transportation staff you have the first and last encounter with young children and their families daily. You set the stage for a successful day in how you positively approach each child and family. This dynamic and interactive workshop will focus on how to strengthen that role in connecting with young children and families. In addition, common challenges that you face regarding familes and young children will be discussed and specific strategies will be addressed especially in the area of common behavior problems you encounter.
