Creating Brain Smart Classrooms
Kim Hughes, Conscious Discipline Master Instructor

Conscious Discipline® promotes permanent behavior changes in both adults and children. The paradigm of change is from a traditional compliance model of discipline, relying on lower brain center approaches of threat and force, to a relationship-based community model that relies on higher-order thinking skills. Experience how this extraordinary model educates adults by establishing an understanding of brain development. Once a basic knowledge is established, Conscious Discipline then draws out the relationships between brain development, learning and behavior. Ultimately, Conscious Discipline uses this information to deliver specific ways to create safer, more caring and more responsive environments for schools, homes and workplaces.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Create an elevator speech that defines Conscious Discipline® (CD).
  2. Name the differences between Traditional Discipline and CD.
  3. Describe the components of the CD Brain State Model as well as CD’s 4 Brain Smart® Principles.
  4. Explain how educators can help children feel safe so they are able to learn and feel connected so they are willing to learn.
Kim Hughes has worked as both an administrator and a teacher of children birth through fifth grade. She discovered the power of Conscious Discipline while serving as an early childhood educator in an inclusive  mental health setting. It soon became her passion to share its transformative and empowering message with as many children, parents and educators as possible.
While working as a kindergarten educator, Kim was named the 1999-2000 North Carolina Teacher of the Year. This honor was presented by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and endorsed by the United States Department of Education and United States Superintendent of Schools.
Kim’s inviting, playful style creates memorable trainings, while her experience with Conscious Discipline is top-notch. “The hours flew by” is a common sentiment at her trainings as attendees are amazed by their own level of engagement and focus on the material. Kim has supported school- wide implementation in both early childcare and elementary settings, mentored administrators, conducted both large and small group trainings and worked directly with teachers of children infant through elementary age.

Digging Deeper into Conscious Discipline® - Moving from Chaos to Calm: Supporting our Most Challenging Children
Kim Hughes, Conscious Discipline Master Instructor
Teachers are crying out for help. The behaviors they face on a daily basis are exhausting and overwhelming. Many teachers have amazing problem-solving skills and wonderful adult-child interactions. However, when faced with trying misbehavior over and over it is difficult to maintain the positive attitude they often have at the start of the day. In this session teachers will explore evidence-based strategies such as adult assertiveness, authentic empathy, and effective consequences that create an emotionally / physically safe school environment as well as techniques to remain calm in the moments of chaos.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. List one protective and one facilitative support factor that increase success with challenging behaviors.
  2. Define why authentic relationships support changes in children’s behavior and name one way to build positive relationships with your children.
  3. Select one reason why a strong understanding of developmentally appropriate practices and child development can reverse mistaken behaviors.
  4. Choose three classroom strategies that you will embed in your classroom environment that will decrease challenging behaviors.
  5. Name two intervention strategies that empower children and reduce negative behaviors.
