Metro Water Recovery -- Operating the World’s Largest Pre-Dewatering Phosphorus Recovery Reactor

Thursday, March 24, 2022

Luncheon Description:
With the successful implementation of plant-wide Bio-P at the 220-MGD Robert W. Hite Treatment Facility, Metro Water Recovery experienced significant unintentional struvite precipitation and deposition in its biosolids treatment train. The negative impacts of struvite were seen throughout the plant, including deposition in digesters, blockage of digestate and centrate pipelines, significant reductions in biosolids dewaterability, and increased effluent phosphorus concentrations due to the unmitigated recycling of phosphorus from biosolids to liquid stream.

A complete analysis and selection process selected pre-dewatering phosphorus recovery/sequestration as the best approach to Metro for meeting near-term and long-term site-specific needs. A MagPrex™ reactor was constructed and is the largest in the world. The project was recently awarded the Water Environment Federation Project Excellence Award in 2021.

After operating the system for over a year, this presentation will include a comparison of the anticipated process operation with full-scale data regarding dewatering improvements, overall chemical use, and bio-P performance.  Lessons learned concerning design and operation of the system will also be presented. A tour of the facility will occur following the presentation.

Speakers:
Blair Wisdom, PE:  Blair is a wastewater design and process engineer with 9 years of experience as a consultant engineer and 6 years at Metro Water Recovery in Denver, Colorado, where she is currently serving as Director of Technology and Innovation. The department focuses on process optimization, pilot and demonstration testing, and advanced data analytics.
