"Just one more thing..." Taking a Columbo Approach to Cognitive Restructuring with Persons Who Stutter

Join us for the Communication Summit at INTRUST Bank Arena in Wichita!
An afternoon of continuing education followed by the Wichita Thunder hockey game!
Session Description: In these sessions, participants will learn about an approach to stuttering treatment that focuses on empathic listening and reconstruction of personal narratives. Participants will practice how to get clients to talk about possible alternative narratives as they restructure the cognitive view of the self and the problem. Additionally, we will explore practical therapeutic strategies and activities that promote taking action and recruiting the support of key individuals in the home and school environment and foster acceptance and self-advocacy in meaningful ways.

Presenters:
Anthony DiLollo, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a professor of speech-language pathology and Director of the Davies School of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Texas Christian University. He specializes in counseling, fluency disorders, interpersonal communication, and qualitative research methods. He has worked as a psychologist and as a speech-language pathologist in clinical and educational settings, as well as over 20 years in academia. Dr. DiLollo has published and presented in the areas of counseling, factors related to effective therapy, and qualitative research in communication sciences and disorders. He is co-author of the textbooks, Counseling in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology: Reconstructing Personal Narratives and Clinical Decision Making in Fluency Disorders.

Ana Paula G. Mumy, SLPD, CCC-SLP, is a trilingual speech-language pathologist and clinical professor at the University of Kansas. She teaches Fluency Disorders at the graduate level and provides and supervises clinical services for people who stutter across the lifespan. She also co-leads an adult chapter of the National Stuttering Association. Dr. Mumy is the co-founder and president of Spero Stuttering, Inc., a nonprofit organization that seeks to help, empower, and advocate for the stuttering community and their families by equipping those who work with people who stutter. She received the NSA's 2022 Professional of the Year award for her work and initiatives through Spero Stuttering. She enjoys singing, writing, reading, and traveling with her husband and kids.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is an NBA athlete who stutters. He has played for the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets, Dallas Mavericks, and New York Knicks. He has placed his basketball career on hold to focus on his nonprofit, Change & Impact, a stuttering initiative with a mission to improve access to healthcare and expand services and resources for those who stutter. “Change & Impact” is working for the passing of a healthcare bill that would assist people with communication disorders by receiving more insurance coverage.
