Wastewater Disinfection with Peracids: Update on PAA and PFA and advanced PAA dosing at Metro Water Recovery

Wednesday, October 25, 2023

Luncheon Description:
Industry drivers are pushing water resource recovery facilities (WRRF) to consider alternative disinfectants. These drivers include improved health and safety for workers, improved safety for the community, improved public health protection via increased effectiveness for viral inactivation and disinfection byproduct control, and to improve simplicity of operations.

This presentation delves into the fascinating realm of wastewater disinfection and explores the use of alternative chemical disinfectants and their integration with advanced dose control systems. We will provide an overview of peracids for wastewater disinfection, including peracetic acid (PAA) and performic acid (PFA). We will also examine the challenges, breakthroughs, and lessons learned from implementing advanced dose control strategies with PAA disinfection at Metro Water Recovery. This case study highlights the potential of advanced dose control for disinfection using any chemical disinfectant (including sodium hypochlorite) and will share practical challenges.

  • The presentation will also include an overview of advanced dose control systems.
  • The presentation will be useful to audience members interested in PAA or PFA, to those interested in advanced dose control and data analytics, or those interested in potentially saving cost in existing chemical systems such as those using sodium hypochlorite. In other words, by improving how chemical dosing can be carried out, these alternatives could help WRRFs that use chemical disinfection save cost and chemical, even if they do not need to consider adopting PFA or PAA in the future.
  • Finally, Metro Water Recovery will present first-hand their challenges, breakthroughs, and lessons learned with their PAA piloting and full-scale demonstration experiences.

Presenters:
Josh Goldman.  Dr. Josh Goldman is a Senior Wastewater Process Engineer at Metro Water Recovery specializing in disinfection and data utilization. In 2019, he helped successfully implement a CT based peracetic acid dosing at the Robert. W. Hite treatment facility. Prior to working at Metro Water Recovery, he worked as an engineering consultant specializing in disinfection evaluations and piloting.

Allegra da Silva.  Dr. Allegra da Silva is Brown and Caldwell’s (BC) Deputy Director of Research and Innovation, partnering with clients to unlock new solutions to improve the environment and protect public health. She is partnering with Dr. Josh Goldman and many other collaborators on WRF 5219 “Performic Acid Disinfection in Wastewater Effluent and CSOs In Context of Disinfection By-Products and Future Ambient Water Quality Criteria for Viruses.” For the past 3 years she also served as BC’s per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) National Coordinator.

Luncheon Format and Location:
This month’s luncheon will be held virtually.  Sorry, you must bring your own lunch. 😊 Instructions on how to register are in the next paragraph. The presentation will begin at 12 noon on the above date (Mountain time, of course). The presentation will be broadcast using Microsoft Teams. Folks who have registered for the luncheon will receive an email the day before with a link to the meeting. Please be sure your microphone is muted, and camera turned off when you join the meeting. The first is obvious and the latter is to reduce bandwidth required. At the end of the presentation, we will hold a Q&A session. For Q&A, please post a message in the Chat window that you have a question, and Steve will call on folks in order. You don’t have to state your question in the Chat area, but you can if you want. Otherwise just turn on your microphone when Steve calls on you.

Registration:
A registration fee of $15 is being imposed for all attendees. This is reduced from our typical registration to reflect the online nature of the event. Registration and payment for TAC luncheons will be handled as in the past on line at: TAC Registration. Registration may be made for a single attendee or for multiple attendees in a group. It is requested that each individual in a group either register individually or are included in the count for a group registration, and that multiple parties are not partaking in the presentation without registering. If for some reason you are unable to register online, please contact Steve Polson (303-748-0931, or steve.polson@jacobs.com) to arrange for paying with check or cash.

The registration deadline for this event is Tuesday, October 24, at COB. We will send out the link for the luncheon to the email addresses per the registration site by the end of the day on Wednesday. Please note the Teams program does not need to be installed on your computer to participate. When you click the link provided in the email, an option to participate through your browser is offered. There will also be a call-in number, but it is hoped that nobody is forced to do that, as you will only receive the audio. If you registered but do not receive the email on Tuesday, please call Steve Polson (303-748-0931) on Wednesday morning to determine how to get you the link.
