Understanding the Federal and State Advocacy Landscape
The APA Advocacy team provides participants interactive training in federal advocacy skills and how to be effective advocates for psychology in their own communities. The presentation to IPA will include:

Presenter Bio: Alix Ginsberg, MPH, Deputy Chief of State Advocacy, aginsberg@apa.org
Alexandra “Alix” Ginsberg, MPH, is the Deputy Chief of State Advocacy at the American Psychological Association. For over a decade, Ginsberg has advanced key psychology workforce priorities on Capitol Hill, including increased federal support for psychology education and training and access to high-quality mental and behavioral health services for at-risk populations. Ginsberg supports strategic advocacy initiatives for APA, including its grassroots work and the Psychology PAC. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Syracuse University, and Master’s in Public Health from the George Washington University.

Program Description: Clinician and Youth Perspectives on the Use of Teletherapy
During and following the COVID-19 pandemic, a proliferation of telehealth occurred. Notably, teletherapy became a lifeline for youth needing access to behavioral health services amidst a nationally-acknowledged behavioral health crisis. Telehealth services offer the possibility of decreasing barriers to accessing behavioral health care, especially for families who live in rural areas or those from socioeconomically-disadvantaged backgrounds. However, the widespread adoption of telehealth also presents trade-offs for clinicians and families in key ethical and practice domains related to risk, patient engagement, and effectiveness. Current guidelines are over a decade old and inadequate to support clinicians in making evidence-based decisions about the appropriate use of telehealth.
In this presentation, we describe findings from interviews with clinicians, youth, and their caregivers regarding their experiences with teletherapy and their decision-making processes surrounding its use. We describe key themes emerging from these interviews and offer guidance and recommendations for how to carefully consider the use of teletherapy for youth and their families.

Presenter Bio: Allison E. Meyer, PhD, HSPP
Dr. Meyer has been an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine since 2022. She received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Duke University in 2020 and completed her psychology internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan.
Her clinical interests are in exposure-based treatment of pediatric anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorders, with a particular focus on parent-centered treatment.
Her research interests include dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practices into community settings and affective mechanisms of reassurance seeking in anxiety disorders. She is currently collaborating with Dr. Casey Pederson to develop tool to assist clinicians’ ethical decision making about appropriate use of telehealth for youth and families.
Dr. Allison Meyer
Presenter Bio: Casey A. Pederson, PhD, HSPP
Dr. Pederson is a clinical child psychologist and Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the Indiana University School of Medicine. She specializes in the assessment and treatment of potentially life-threatening behaviors in adolescents, such as aggression, substance use, and suicide risk, with a focus on addressing these concerns among legally involved youth. Holding a doctorate from the University of Kansas, Dr. Pederson fortified her expertise through specialized training at Brown University's Warren Alpert Medical School, concentrating on juvenile justice and behavioral health. Her postdoctoral training at Indiana University School of Medicine centered on implementing evidence-based assessments and treatments for adolescent substance use for both justice-involved and community youth. Currently, she is the director of the suicide prevention services offered through the Riley Child Outpatient Clinic (including the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality, Dialectical Behavior Therapy), and she engages in research designed to connect youth experiencing high-risk conditions to outpatient treatment and improve their quality of care.
