There is nothing better than a good book. Well, there probably are better things out there like antibiotics and not-for-profits doing great work but I really do love a good book. Getting to hear an author’s perspective and the opportunity to learn, to be challenged, and to do better as a result is the great promise of a well-written text.
To that end, during my time as IPA President, I’ll be hosting a recurring book club for IPA members. The purpose of the book club will be to expose readers to a variety of topics germane to psychology, then come together to discuss the content of the book in a semi-structured environment. The books will always be non-fiction, and the meetings will be focused on discussion around questions derived from the text. The goal is for participants to read the book, enjoy the discussion, and come away with knowledge we can use to make ourselves better as psychologists. Here are the details of our first edition:
Our first book will be High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped and How We Get Outby Amanda Ripley. The author describes this book as “a book about the mysterious force that incites people to lose their minds in ideological disputes, political feuds, or gang vendettas.” She explains high conflict is what happens when conflict escalates beyond the sphere of constructive and becomes a good-versus-evil, us-versus-them mess.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how this first iteration of the book club goes. Since this is a new adventure for IPA, we will see how the format and time/date work for everyone and make adjustments as needed for future iterations.
Happy reading,
